Estrogen is the female sex hormone that helps slow down hair shedding. During the period when the mother's body is preparing for pregnancy, it produces more estrogen. But after the baby is born, hormone levels return to normal, and the hair that had not yet shed due to the effects of estrogen finally begins to fall.
